As one of the world’s most popular traditional handicrafts, variations in ceramic imagery reveal the national history of design and the cultural context behind the visual images. The creation of societal concepts may be influenced by culture, which in turn influences the expression of decorative arts. The study will focus on the evolution of visual images of ceramics in Dutch museums from the 17th to the 19th centuries, using porcelains as a medium for visual and national cultural research, to investigate the reasons for the creation of porcelain motifs and the stories of collecting them, further explore the connections on motifs from different time periods in order to reflect on the relationship between visual design and ethnic structures. Also, this research will examine these ceramics from a contemporary perspective. Trying to wider debate new understandings of national identity design in human’s visual society.
