Text and Textiles Seminar (open to PhD & ReMa students)
Text and Textiles | Seminar (open to PhD & ReMa students), 2.5 ECS.
Sonia de Laforcade (Radboud) & Hanneke Grootenboer (UvA)
While textiles have been marginalized by art history and the art market for decades, interest in this medium is currently booming. The focus of this transhistoric seminar is on the question why textiles have been a particularly suitable medium for giving underrepresented groups a voice and a form of self-authentication—in past as well as present cultures. Needlework and fiber art have served as forms of expressing grief and frustration but also insisted on offering possibilities for solidarity and healing. We discuss classic texts (Roszika Parker, Sadie Plant, Anni Albers) as well as recent publications (by T’ai Smith, Cadence Kinsy, Ceclia Vicuña and Rachel Cusk). Special attention will be given to the relation between technology and handicraft, and the relation of handwork to repair, as presented by the Feministische Handwerk Partij. Our discussion starts on Friday November 22 at 13:00 in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam with a tour through Unravel: The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art by co-curator Amanda Pinatih. For questions please contact: Sonia de Laforcade, sonia.delaforcade@ru.nl, or Hanneke Grootenboer, h.grootenboer@uva.nl
