The aims to un- and remap the prevailing narratives of the 20th century modern art are gaining ground around the globe. By examining the unknown entanglements and pluralities of modernisms across the continents, the Eurocentric perceptions marginalizing or excluding the varied artistic sensibilities and discourses are being deconstructed. This paradigm shift towards the retheorization of modernity, modernism and postmodernism requests new methods, sensitivities and conceptual frameworks to accommodate different aesthetic languages, artistic practices, agencies and identities (e.g. indigeneity). At the same time, it is based on more nuanced understanding of the entangled colonial histories and their legacies on arts at all fronts (art market, representation, valorization, exhibition and collection politics and education).
In this summer school we will critically re-examine some of the major perceptions of “modernism” in relation to the emerging studies and theories in a global perspective.
